Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her new music review with singles from Alba Fury Out of Time and Choses Sauvages En joue
Artist: Alba Fury
Track: Out of Time
Edinburgh based Alba Fury have released their debut single Out of Time. It's an atmospheric track, opening with a bass heavy riff creating a gothic vibe, yet it canters at pace with pounding drums and urgent vocals, full of emotive tension. The dark hues blend with the beats and echoey guitar riffs to create an accomplished confident debut.
In line with their DIY ethos the single was produced largely by the band themselves. It was recorded, in part, in Aberdeen, with billboard-charting producer Ryan (RYZY) MacKay tracking the drums and bass guitar. The guitar and vocals were recorded by the band in Edinburgh, with mixing and post-production handled by the band’s bass player (and songwriter-producer), Jamie Thomson.
He shares the following on the track: "Out of Time is a song about mortality. It’s about realising that our time on earth is limited, and the only thing we can do is accept it. It’s a pretty bleak subject, but I think it’s also quite life-affirming. The song is an exploration of impermanence and the conflicting feelings that go with it. I guess it’s also a way of trying to connect with people who have similar contradictory feelings about what it means to make the most of your life."
The 4-piece came together in early 2023 after former West Lothian bandmates Jamie Thomson and Michael Ward (co-founder of La Sierra Casa songwriting camp with The View’s Kyle Falconer) decided to develop some demo ideas together. Citing Fontaines DC, Sprints, Young Fathers, and Joy Division as influences, on Out of Time however there is a sense they are their own thing. Looking forward to hearing what's next.

Artist: Choses Sauvages
Track: En joue
Hailing from Montreal, the French-language band Choses Sauvages have released their new single En joue. Taking inspiration from the frustrations evoked by political injustice and the media Choses Sauvages move away slightly from their blend of dance punk into more classic new-wave.
Frontman Félix Bélisle expands: ''En joue refers to the feeling of helplessness faced by the extremely violent international news from recent years. It also deals with the dehumanization of certain populations taken hostage in armed conflicts and the fear of others."
Spiky guitars and vocal harmonies echo throughout the song, as the lyrics repeatedly urge to run faster and circle back on themselves, suggesting perhaps the confusion of attempting to move forward in our current tumultuous times. There is however a lightness to En joue. Funky punky vibes exude throughout and that abrupt stop takes the listener slightly by surprise, creating an urge to tune in again immediately.
It's good to hear that Choses Sauvages will be bringing their fiery live performances to the UK within the next year. By all accounts their shows are irreverent and explosive. Known for their stage presence, the members of the band (led by the incandescent Félix Bélisle) make it a point to set any stage on fire. Roll on 2025!
