Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her reviews of new music with singles from Eades Loose Cliffs Edge and Jagged Baptist Club You Are A Dog
Artist: Eades
Track: Loose Cliffs Edge
Independent indie rabble-rousers Eades release new single Loose Cliffs Edge, the latest from new EP Fight or Flight out 30 August via their own label Bam Bam Records.
The new single brings a more emotive sound from the Leeds 5-piece. Beginning calmly enough with guitar and vocals nevertheless it imperceptibly grows and pulls the listener in with every note.
The track refers to frontman Harry Jordan’s past struggles with anxiety and how with support from his partner was able to take back control of his mental health. The Loose Cliff's Edge is a metaphor for the place he found himself in on a daily basis whilst the "girl with grey in her eyes" refers to his partner, who without even realising it has helped change his life for the better.
As Harry continues: “The song came from a time spent on holiday in Australia with my now wife. I went for a walk on my own and ended up sitting on the seafront watching the surfers and listening to music. Sophie was sitting on the beach, and watching her going about her business filled me with a huge sense of contentment. I was thinking about how much my life had changed for the better with her in it and how slowly a lot of my anxieties had started to fade away. After that, I started to enjoy life at a slower pace and quickly my priorities changed for the better.
'The girl with grey in her eyes' refers to my wife Sophie - when we got together we always used to talk about the colour of her eyes and how they were forever changing colour. I called them pigeon, like the different colours on their feathers, but she just called them grey which I thought was interesting.”
Loose Cliff's Edge continues to build creating a wall of sound to simply lose yourself in. To see artists expand and develop their sound over time is an utter joy. The personal story is beautifully portrayed here and it's thoroughly engrossing. Further good news for Eades fans is that they'll be touring the EP release through September.

Artist: Jagged Baptist Club
Track: You Are A Dog
LA alt-rockers Jagged Baptist Club announce their new album Physical Surveillance set for release on 15 November, their first for Nice Swan Records (English Teacher, Sprints, Chalk). To accompany this news they have shared new single You Are A Dog.
It opens with electronic beats before launching into a frenzied, fun-packed, bouncing track which exudes personality. The scuzzy guitars are reminiscent of dance punk funk bands such as The Rapture. It's absolutely party time here with Jagged Baptist Club, and you just want to be part of their gang.
Having travelled to Joshua Tree California in 2023 to record their forthcoming album with producer Alex Newport (At the Drive-In, Bloc Party, City and Colour), the band will be showcasing their new material at a series of LA shows this month, building on previous shows alongside English Teacher and SPRINTS (2024 West Coast US tour support).
Intriguing, enigmatic frontman Blake Stokes explained the following on their new album: “I just imagined Shaun Ryder writing the screenplay for a Crank movie, just a collection of wild scenes and surreal images, again keeping it simple. See you in the pit, let’s get to shoving.”
Let's hope Jagged Baptist Club made it back on this side of the pond sometime soon. In the meantime roll on album release date, let's party!
