Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her reviews of new music with singles from GIRLBAND! Heartbreak Town and snake eyes hottest day on record
Artist: GIRLBAND!
Track: Heartbreak Town
GIRLBAND! have released their new track Heartbreak Town. It follows the singles Not Like The Rest and 21st Century Suffragette, all taken from their EP Heartbreak Town which is set for release on 30 July via Soul Kitchen/EMI North.
Heartbreak Town provides a platform for the vocals of lead singer Georgie, full of passion, creating imagery with the power of her sound. Where the previous singles have leaned into the edginess of punk and indie, Heartbreak Town is poppier with a tinge of country, and goodness do GIRLBAND! pull it off.
The Nottingham-based trio show such breadth in their musical output already, and this single shares universal themes which will resonate. There is an energy and vitality to their music and this track is no exception.
Singer Georgie talks about the track: “Heartbreak Town is written about a town called Mansfield where I grew up. The lyric is very much about always being rooted in the town you grew up in and how your heart always belongs there, even though the town has lost many of the things that were there when I was young and so much sadness I saw there growing up, it will still always be my home town. And it’s very much inspired by family and friends and people of Mansfield that keep the fire alive there.”
The EP will feature the three previous singles and live recordings, and live the band amplify things to create a world of their own, "a joyous, all-inclusive zone of empowerment". What more could we possibly ask for.

Artist: snake eyes
Track: hottest day on record
Brighton trio snake eyes have released their new single hottest day on record via Alcopop Records!. The track had its first play on Nels Hilton's BBC Radio 1 Future Alternative Show. All profits from streams, downloads and a limited run of merch will be split between Music Declares Emergency UK (a global movement of musicians and music lovers coming together to take action on climate) and Greenpeace UK.
This tight three-piece are full of rock n roll energy and they continue to follow up last year's health EP with music that is as raw as it is playful, and thoroughly engaging. With a social conscience and yet not preachy Snake Eyes were a standout band from the huge number of unofficial showcases that took place at The Great Escape in their hometown of Brighton. I have been following them and dancing to them ever since.
hottest day on record speeds along, with guitar riffs that are edgy and drums that simply pound on and on. Short, sharp, spiky and with a vocal which layers perfectly with the instrumentation. The subject matter aligns with the organisations that the band are raising funds for. Go see live if you can. You will not be disappointed.
