Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her reviews of new music with singles from Sløtface I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit and Wax Head Rusty Cutter
Artist: Sløtface
Track: I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit
Sløtface have released the final track from their upcoming third album, Film Buff set for release on 27 September. The single I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit is a belter racing along at pace, all scuzzy guitars and loaded with cultural references.
"Thought I'd move to Miami
Thought I'd get a fresh start
Become a cardio bunny
On dance with the stars."
It's a 2 minute blast of a track which to be honest ends too soon. Getting caught up in the energy it was impossible not to grin while listening. The lyrics are sharp and witty but of course with the title you know there is an underlying message within the mayhem.
Frontwoman Haley Shea expands: "I was completely obsessed with Tim Robinson's show I Think You Should Leave last summer and watched all the seasons about four times, laughing hysterically. In the middle of this obsession, the sketch where he says 'I used to be a piece of shit' jumped out, and I thought it would make a great lyric, so I saved it in my little idea bank on my phone. I just wanted to make it fun and silly and over the top. It also makes me think of all the people that are out here working on themselves, always trying to better, going to therapy etc, me included, and it poses the question - do we really change all that much? It’s a song for everyone that used to be a piece of shit, who’s working on it, who’s still kind of a piece of shit in some ways and that’s ok!”
Film Buff will be Sløtface's third studio album and is the result of a close collaboration between Shea and producer/songwriter Preben Sælid Andersen (Hajk, Death by Unga Bunga). Shea drew inspiration from the world of cinema to create an album that feels like putting on an action movie on a Friday night, falling asleep in front of the TV, and being thrown between dreams, fiction, and reality. One thing is guaranteed, bland it will not be.

Artist: Wax Head
Track: Rusty Cutter
Wax Head are a drummer-fronted punk quartet from Manchester. They have unleashed their latest single, Rusty Cutter, on Sour Grapes Records. It's a wonderfully ramshackle blend of garage psych and punk energy. This is a slice of Rock n' Roll Wax Head style. Not 100% what the lyrics are but who cares! The pounding drums are accompanied by guitars set free, wild and feral. It all falls apart towards the end in a beautifully chaotic way.
Speaking on the new single, the band share: "Rusty Cutter pays homage to our love for garage-rock. Despite us all having various influences, it is the respect for the genre that ultimately ties Wax Head together. We wanted to blend noisy, angular, and experimental sounds into the more straightforward structures we are inspired by, but the track's brain-tickling noise and treble-driven guitars keep it distinctively Wax Head."
The band have also announced a string of headline shows across the UK and Europe this October. Highlights include Left Of The Dial festival in Rotterdam and They're Gonna Be Big Festival at Paris' legendary venue, Supersonic.
Contemplating their upcoming tour, Wax Head said: "We are thrilled to go on our first European tour this year - being able to showcase our music to new crowds, explore new cities, and play international music festivals is an exciting opportunity." They elaborate: "We have been playing as a band for just over two years, so this feels quite monumental for us. We are also grateful to Sour Grapes Records for their continued support and PRS Foundation’s International Showcase for funding our trip to Left of the Dial festival in Rotterdam."
I'll see you down the front!
