You Were Loved is the new release from TV People and was released on all streaming platforms on May 26.

It's their first new track since the release of their Nothing More EP in 2021. Paul Donohoe (vocals/guitar) & Brendan Clarke (drums) have been augmented by the addition of Paula Moura and Ben O'Connor; the sound is bigger and fuller with Bren's drums driving a stylishly stately palette of intelligent and heartfelt post punk.

The track grips right from the off with a delirious drum fill leading into a chorus refrain before the verse. You Were Loved is produced by Caesar Edmunds who has worked with both St Vincent and Foals. He's worked his magic here by retaining the band's grittiness and adding an alt pop catchiness which makes this a surefire radio banger.

Of the new single, singer Paul says, "The lyrics of You Were Loved were written after the death of a close family friend who took their own life during the past year. Writing them was a way for me to process the feelings of anger, sadness and confusion that overwhelm me when I think of their life and death. The song helped me to get a lot of anger out of my system and express the underlying heartbreak and love that I feel when I think of them."

The repeating phrase of "why can't I" echoes the despair and futility and contextualised with the music makes You Were Loved a fitting and poignant tribute; and in our view the band's best work yet.

You Were Loved was recorded at Unity Studios London, mixed by Grammy award winning Caesar Edmunds (QOTSA, St Vincent, Foals) at Battery, London with assistant recording engineer Joshua Rumble. The track was mastered by Christian Wright at Abbey Road Studios.
